Benefits of Yoga

By: Princess Cole

"Yoga can seem intimidating for those who think it's complicated, and some individuals simply don't know where to start. This is a journey that isn't just a hobby, it's a lifestyle that requires commitment. A journey to overall health. One of the first things people say is, "I'm not flexible". Yoga is not about being flexible and doing fancy poses. Yoga is about overall wellness. Physically, mentally, and spiritually.

There are many different types of yoga that don't require you to focus on creating poses. Your main goal should be focused on being a better you. Depending on where you are in your life is what will help you determine what type of yoga is right for you. For example, Hatha yoga focuses on breathing, meditation and body awareness. Ashtanga yoga focuses on body movements that continuously flow with your breathing. Vinyasa yoga is a guided sequence of postures and movements. There is something for everyone, and the benefits  are endless.

Calm The Mind

Calming your mind leaves room for you to focus on what's important to you. Sustainability, owning a business, how to let things go, body awareness, your attitude about life...whatever it may be. As a result, it:

  • boosts your confidence

  • improves your memory

  • promotes positive thinking

  • control over your emotions

  • reduces stress

Improves Your Health Yoga can help tone your body and even aid in weight loss if you're consistent. And for those who think you have to be flexible beforehand, it's the complete opposite. If practicing asanas interests you, yoga is what you do to gain the flexibility you need. Other benefits include:

  • boosts energy

  • improves libido

  • improves balance

  • reduced blood pressure

  • increases stamina

  • improves sleep

  • builds muscle

  • improves posture

  • increases blood flow

  • releases tension

If you'd like to try yoga to improve your overall health, research different yoga styles, check YouTube and other yoga resources, and practice at home. Practice a few times a week until it becomes a part of your daily routine. If it helps, leave your yoga mat on the side of your bed so you have no choice but to step foot on it before you do anything for the day. Stay committed."
