Mommy of a signed baby model: is social media helpful?

Updated: Jan 14, 2020

Modeling is something I see a lot of parents are interested in. It's so fun getting our kids dressed up and taking hundreds of pictures but wouldn't it be even better if they were monetarily benefiting from it?

I did a Q and A with a mommy who's son is a signed model! I figured her insight might be interesting to some moms following the same path.

What made you get your son into modeling? I chose modeling as an extracurricular however, the people in the modeling world ended up loving him so much I made it a serious endeavor.

How long was your son modeling and how long before he became a signed model?

My oldest was signed when he was 4 months old to his 1st agency in Boston, Mass. He had no previous modeling experience. We went to an open call at the agency and he was signed 2 days later.

Was it hard getting your son signed?

No, it wasn't hard for my oldest. However, it was difficult navigating the child modeling world for the 1st time with no support or experience.

How is it working modeling into your life?

Managing a child model is time consuming and a commitment. I am a stay at home mom and it still can be a challenge at times. We view my boys modeling careers as just that, careers! We plug castings, photo shoots, fashion weeks, etc into our planner so that I am able to plan accordingly.

How do you think social networks like Instagram effect his modeling career or do you think it has no effect? (Effects being benefits, exposure, opportunities, etc.)  So far, I don't think Instagram has made too much of a difference. However, I believe it is important (not necessary) for him to have an account to act as a visual portfolio. The boys profile has become quite undefined. However, I think that is a good thing also so people know above all, they are children!

Do you guys do any fashion shows?

To date, no because of the boys were in the baby division. Usually, the baby division does not do fashion shows. However, my 3 year old was invited to do his 1st fashion show on July 8th! However, due to him being on the Spectrum and sometimes, unaware, my husband and I have chosen not to allow him to walk in this one.  Do you think modeling will effect his self esteem now and while growing up? I think modeling will effect his self esteem in a positive way. For him this is extremely important because children on the autism spectrum are seen as detached, distant, angry and more. Though my son is non-verbal, I believe modeling effects him in a great way. Though he does not speak in words, he speaks in energy, presence and fearlessness! Modeling teaches him self-control, professionalism, choice making, defining who HE is and that yes he does have autism but autism does not have him! Do you think your son has fun with the modeling? Yes. I make sure he doesn't feel pressure or forced. If he doesn't do well at an audition, casting or shoot, I STILL take him out for ice cream because the fact is HE DID IT! Just because he may not achieved a goal the way that others wanted him to does not take away from him. I tell him That! I always stress to him after a shoot, casting or audition: "Romello, mommy is so PROUD of You! You are a star! You did an excellent job!" We are always grateful for the opportunity but I make sure he doesn't feel obligated to do anything. I will not push him. If he's done with a shoot, he's Done! (This has never happened though) Romello is a loving, bubbly, energetic kid! He spreads his light anywhere he goes.
